Leone Stars Show They Can Do It

with 3 comments

In what was seen as an upset in African football, our darling Leone Stars of Sierra Leone made us proud last night by holding the giants of Egypt to a one whole draw. Some of the world’s media referred to the shock draw as an opening-round curse for Egypt but I think as lowly we are rated the problem with Sierra Leone football is the effect of the war and the impact it has got on all levels of football in the country.

We shocked the defending champions in their own background on 56 minutes at Cairo Stadium when Cyprus-based Sierra Leonean international Mustapha Bangura put us in front.

Although defender Mahmoud Fathallah rescued the Egyptians when he equalised four minutes later, there was never a winning goal for the top ranked team in Africa – Egypt who began with six of the team that defeated Ghana in the 2010 Nations Cup final.

Coach Hassan Shehata had warned his team about the perils of not making a winning start, and his fears were justified by the resilient display by our mostly unknown set of players.

Egypt are ranked number one in Africa this month by world governing body FIFA and Sierra Leone 36 and although our inspirational captain; China-based playmaker Mohamed Kallon was injured, it made no difference and our boys were able to make it. Congratulations to our darling Leone Stars and we just cannot wait to see you put up a much more improved performance against South Africa here in Freetown on October 10.

There couldn’t have been a more exciting finale to the Sierra Leone Premier League that what happened at the National Stadium in Freetown on Sunday. East End Lions FC put up a valiant performance and trounced their long time rival Mighty Blackpool to clinch the Premiership title after a frenetic encounter.

East End Lions who were the defending champions went to their final match knowing that a victory is they need to lift up the title ahead of FC Kallon. But after edging Diamond Stars of Kono at the National Stadium in Freetown on Sunday 27th, East End Lions the Killers knew anything less than victory for them will be insufficient as FC Kallon batted neck to neck with them for the title race.

FC Kallon who bagged fifty five points in the league beat Wusum Stars at the Teko Barracks, Makeni by two goals to nil with Lansana Kamara and Ibrahim Tetteh Kamara bagging the goals in a tense encounter that was being monitored from the National Stadium in Freetown by East End Lions fans.

East End Lions had to fight tooth and nail even after taking the lead through an early goal as Mighty Blackpool pushed forward and find the back of the net, the celebration was short-lived as the referee ruled out the goal. But Mighty Blackpool was not going to give their arch-rivals an easy ride. As Mighty Blackpool pushed forward to get an equaliser, East End Lions’ Sidikie Mansaray got the better of his opponents by sliding in the winner and settling the nerves of hundreds of East End Lions fans at the National Stadium by making it two nil. That was the final goal of the game as the final whistle was witnessed by wild celebrations from the Lion fans. At the end, East End Lions won the league by just a point earning fifty points ahead of FC Kallon with fifty five and Ports Authority ending the league in third place bagging forty eight points.

“We are the best team in Sierra Leone and this is just an indication that despite the money and power of FC Kallon, we are still top and we will continue to be top,” said an excited East End Lions fan, Mahmoud Kargbo.
